Research

Currently, I am conducting research into a number of topics, including the evolving nature of public service broadcasting within the wider cultural and creative industries. I am also involved in specific projects, including one focused on the uses of digital imagery in news reporting (with particular reference to what I call ‘citizen witnessing’), while also writing an alternative historiography of war photography.

Further research revolves around science journalism on the web, examining issues such as social responsibility, transparency and accountability in news reporting of science and technology.

My publications include the authored book Citizen Witnessing: Revisioning Journalism in Times of Crisis (Polity Press, 2013) and the edited collections, The Routledge Companion to News and Journalism (Routledge revised edition, 2012) and Photojournalism and Citizen Journalism: Co-operation, Collaboration and Connectivity (Routledge, 2017).

Funding for my research has been awarded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), British Academy, Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) of Canada, and Swedish Research Council, amongst others.
